Ratul Puri: Balancing India’s Energy Transition with the Need for Reliable Power

India’s power sector is going through a period of change. This is the broader context in which Hindustan Power’s proposed 2×800 MW transitional power project at Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, becomes relevant. The proposed Phase II development has received the required environmental clearance, an important step in the project’s development.

For a project of this scale, environmental clearance provides a framework for considering factors such as emissions, water use, land requirements and waste management as the project progresses. It brings these considerations into the development process alongside the project’s infrastructure and power-generation requirements.

The Anuppur project also builds on an existing generation base. Hindustan Power developed a 1,200 MW (2×600 MW) coal-based power plant in Anuppur, with the two units commissioned in 2015 and 2016. The proposed Phase II comprises 2×800 MW units, making it an important part of the company’s generation portfolio.

The relevance of the project also extends beyond its capacity. India’s electricity system is seeing a growing contribution from solar and wind power, whose generation can vary depending on weather conditions and the time of day. As the share of renewable energy increases, dependable generation can play an important role in supporting grid stability and meeting electricity requirements when renewable output varies.

“The Anuppur project reflects our commitment to support India’s power infrastructure and economic growth. Reliable transitional energy continues to play a critical role in ensuring stable supply, meeting rising demand and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security,” Ratul Puri said.

Large-scale power infrastructure also needs to account for environmental considerations. The environmental clearance for the proposed Phase II provides a framework for these requirements to be incorporated as the project moves through its subsequent stages.

The proposed Anuppur expansion comes at a time when India is strengthening its power infrastructure alongside the rapid growth of renewable energy. Its development reflects the broader task facing the power sector: expanding renewable energy while maintaining a dependable electricity system.
